Het is bijna zover! Sint is al in het land, en dus het is weer tijd voor mij om een Sinter Klaas gedicht te verzinnen.
Dit jaar heb ik mijn verloofde, en mijn surprise idee is om een graf en grafsteen voor hem te maken met het datum van onze aanstande bruiloft. Het surprise zelf is best makkelijk (gelukkig, aangezien mijn papier-maché creaties van de afgelopen jaren), maar het gedicht dit jaar wordt moeilijk vermoed ik. Omdat het een grafsteen is dacht ik dat het grappiger zou zijn om een rijmende toespraak te schrijven in plaats van een normaal gedicht.
Dus, mijn vraag - zijn er typische Nederlandse uidrukking die met uitvaarten zijn geassocieerd? In het Engels bijvoorbeeld, heb je "dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to mourn the passing of our beloved..." etc. Zolang als ik een paar van zulke uitdrukkingen in kan werken zodat het duidelijk wordt wat de bedoeling is vind ik het prima. Hij is katholiek en wij wonen in Noord Brabant als dat een verschil maakt.

So I am a Canadian who has been living in Amsterdam for a year. I love it here so much! I finally got into the inburgering to get the free Dutch lessons which start next week. I'm trying to speak more Dutch and write more Dutch (even if it sucks or I make mistakes).
So I'm updating my Facebook and I say "Ik ben honger [which I know is not correct now]. Ik eten Loops! Heel lekker!"
Loops are a kind of cereal, sort of like Cheerios in North America. But, lo and behold, the perfect time to find out that the word "loops" in Dutch means to be in heat or horny. I got a LOT of teasing about that from all my Dutch friends last night. All in good spirits! I still think it's hilarious. I was kept in the dark until I asked my boyfriend about it and he was nearly in hysterics telling me what it meant.
I look forward to many more embarrassing things that I will say and write in Dutch. |

Hey all, I'm really excited to have found this community!
I just started learning Dutch at the beginning of the year, but I've been working really hard at it and making pretty strong progress, I think. I'm planning to move to the Netherlands in a year and a few months, and I'll need to get a job, so I'm pretty serious about getting the language down.
Few questions:
The book I'm using is from the Teach Yourself series, (the regular one, not the colloquial one) it's got tulips all over the front and I have the version with the two CDs... anyone know this one? I like it, but it has just been brought to my attention that although some of the other languages in the same series have advanced versions available, the Dutch one doesn't. I'm already halfway through this one, I'm going to need an slightly-less-beginniner/intermediate method soon. Recommendations?
I'd really like to read and hear some Dutch that isn't from my textbook/CD set. My local language store doesn't have anything but methods and etc, so it's amazon.com for me. Any recommendations? Also, are there some good Dutch tv/movies I can get on the internet? I've been watching Holland's Next Top Model in the background while I do my boring part-time desk job, but that's it. Films with subtitles would be especially amazing.
Lastly, if anyone's in Montreal, Canada and wants to practice, hit me up!

Hello. I may be asking a rather simple and even stupid thing, but a friend pointed me to this community, saing it was a good, friendly and reliable place :)
I've been asked by someone from my fammily, to find a specific phrase for them, in Dutch, because they want to suprise some friends for christmass. Now, while the simple 'Merry Christmass and a Happy New Year" I've been able to find, I had problems with the "Thank you for all the (wonderful - not necessary) gifts!"
Now, I belive that: "Prettig Kerstfeest en een gelukkig Nieuw Jaar!" means "Merry Christmass and a Happy New Year!" Though, if it is wrong, please, do correct me.
So, if anyone would be kind enough to help me with the socound part of the message, that is the " Thank you for all the presents", I would be very gratefull. My aunt really wanted me to help her, it means a lot to her, so please, if you can, help me a bit :)

I wrote an email the other day in Dutch. The recipient was a native German speaker, so she understood what I WANTED to say, but I've no idea how many errors I made, or of what type.
So, would you please read the email (about 4 sentences, hehe) and let me know how you would change it and why?
